Finding purpose through paint
Painting has become far more than a hobby for me. It has given me purpose, peace, and a place to express emotions that words sometimes cannot. It is my therapy, my happy place, and an ongoing journey of discovery.
Originally from South Africa, I made Australia my home in 1997. Before becoming an artist, I served in both the South African Defence Force and the Australian Defence Force. After twenty years of service in the Australian Defence Force, I was medically discharged.
Leaving a career that had shaped so much of my life was one of the hardest transitions I had ever faced. Like many people leaving military service, I struggled to find my place and purpose again.
My journey into painting began rather unexpectedly with a paint-by-numbers kit. It took me three years to finish—although, in fairness, one of those years was spent travelling around Australia in our caravan!
Afterwards, I bought some blank canvases and paints, but they sat untouched for quite some time. I was afraid to begin. Afraid of getting it wrong. Afraid of failing.
Then one day I thought:
"Bugger it... let's give it a go."
And that little decision changed everything.
Since then, there has been no looking back. Painting has given me a renewed sense of purpose and a creative outlet that continues to challenge, inspire and fulfil me.
My inspiration
Animals have always captivated me—both those that roam the land and those that call the oceans home. There is something deeply moving about the beauty, strength, and quiet spirit of nature.
When I paint an animal, I want to capture more than its appearance. I want to capture something of its character, emotion, and spirit. I spend a great deal of time bringing the eyes to life because I believe they are truly the window to the soul.
I work primarily with acrylics, occasionally incorporating gouache to create different textures and effects. Every painting I create is an original. I do not produce prints, and I never paint the exact same artwork twice. Even when I return to a favourite subject or theme, each painting develops its own personality, story, and character.
Future vision for M.Denice
I hope to grow M.Denice into a recognised Australian art brand known for original animal and nature artwork with emotional depth and storytelling. I want to continually develop as an artist, exhibit my work, build a community of collectors, and eventually offer personalised pet portraits.
Above all, I want to create authentic, meaningful artwork that connects people with nature and brings beauty, emotion, and a sense of peace into their lives. My focus is on creating unique, one-of-a-kind artwork with meaning and personality, rather than mass-produced art.
